Leadership is a concept used so frequently yet pretty tough to define in words. Asking several people what they think leadership is; would show no duplication of answers, with each person explaining what they feel represents good leadership. Those answers might involve the words humility, motivation, relationship, government, management, authority, power, control, etc., and all are correct.
For me, a leader is someone who sees what others do not see and shows them what to do to see it. Accordingly, leadership, in my opinion, is the process by which a leader communicates a vision effectively and directs his followers to achieve it.
The terminologies are familiar as well. A leader is one who provides leadership. A follower is a person who adheres to the opinion and movement of another (the leader).
What creates a following?
- Vision: People follow someone who knows (or appears to know) the way. A leader should be able to see far ahead and give a sense of direction to others. Decision-making and problem-solving are skills that harness the asset of vision.
- Influence: Often mistaken for rule or display of power, this is the ability to make the team members or followers understand the organization’s key objectives and contribute to achieving it. Influence sells the vision and makes the followers want to get there without coercion.
Attributes of good leadership:
- Leading by example – Modeling to one’s followers what you expect from them sets the standard for proficiency. They see the value system and know they can’t do less.
- Good communication – This can be challenging. Despite that, its importance cannot be over-emphasized. A good leader should be capable of analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the team and provide direction in a language that they understand. Where the communication is compromised, the climate of work becomes hostile; everyone seeks their individual goal rather than the organization’s common objective.
- Responsibility – Good leaders understand and practice sharing the praise and owning the blame. Displaying accountability and dedication to work motivates the followers.
- Coaching – A good leader should be able to understand the team, appreciate everyone’s peculiarity, and utilize their differences for good. Being a coach means supplying A the needed structure he needs to function while giving B just a deadline to meet; because B knows what to do but needs to be time-bound to deliver the work. The leader should be able to know when to bring up the next project, when to celebrate wins, and when to build character in the people.
