Christians, despite their faith, may still grapple with self-doubt. This internal struggle can arise from various sources, often rooted in past failures, comparisons with others, or perceived shortcomings. Let’s delve into these common reasons and explore how God sees us.

Past Failures:

One of the most common reasons Christians question their worth is due to past failures and/or sins. The weight of past mistakes can often lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and unworthiness. However, believers need to accept the righteousness made available through the sacrifice of Jesus.

Romans 3:23-24

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

This verse reminds us that no one is perfect and that God’s grace is sufficient to cover our sins.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When we fall into sin, we must reach out and access His provision of forgiveness and remember that God’s love and forgiveness extend beyond our shortcomings.

Comparisons with Others:

Another common source of self-doubt is comparing oneself to others. We may look at the accomplishments, talents, or perceived spiritual maturity of others and feel inadequate. However, this type of comparison is harmful and can lead to feelings of inferiority. The Bible warns against comparing ourselves to others, as it can lead to pride or despair.

Galatians 6:4

But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting, but to himself alone, and not to another.

This verse encourages us to focus on our spiritual growth and avoid comparing ourselves to others.

Perceived Shortcomings:

Christians may also question their worth due to perceived shortcomings. We may feel that we are not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough to be loved by God. However, these beliefs are often based on false assumptions and can hinder our relationship with God. The Bible assures us that God loves us unconditionally, regardless of our perceived disabilities.

1 John 4:19

We love, because He first loved us.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

If God’s love were based on what we did, then it would be up to us to sustain that love. The Scriptures remind us that God’s love for us is not based on our merit (good works, deservedness) but on His love and grace.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This passage assures us that nothing can separate us from God’s love, not even our own perceived shortcomings.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace, you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
